Fun Canyon Facts:

The Coconino Sandstone was once a Sahara-like sand sea, called an erg. It was a wind-blown dune desert that stretched from present-day Arizona all the way to Canada. The name "Coconino" is derived from "Cohonino," the Hopi word for Havasupai and Yavapai.
